EffectsItem loss depends on the area, skull and Protect Item

Death returns you to home after an ordinary fight. What happens to your items depends on where you died and whether another player killed you.

What happens when you die?

Situation What to expect
Ordinary monster fight outside the Wilderness, with no player killer You keep your inventory and equipment and return to home. You do not need to reclaim these items from Death.
Death in the Wilderness You keep protected items. Other items can drop, break or lose charges, even if a monster killed you.
Killed by another player Unprotected tradeable items can go to the killer as ground loot or a loot key.
Minigame, raid or other activity The activity can use its own death and respawn rules. Check the activity before entering.

Keeping your equipment does not protect Hardcore Ironman status. An ordinary death can turn a Hardcore Ironman into a regular Ironman.

Protected items

For an ordinary dangerous death, the base protection is:

Skull Protect Item off Protect Item active
No skull 3 eligible items 4 eligible items
Normal skull 0 eligible items 1 eligible item
High-risk skull 0 eligible items Prayer disabled

Protection takes eligible items from your inventory and worn equipment in order of their protection value. This value can differ from the price you paid. Some items cannot be protected.

Protect Item requires 25 Prayer and must be active when you die. Keep enough prayer points for it to stay on. A high-risk skull disables this prayer.

Open Items kept on death from the equipment tab to inspect your setup. Its switches let you preview a skull, Protect Item, a player killer and deeper Wilderness. Switching these options changes the preview; it does not activate the prayer or remove a real skull. Use the item exceptions below when planning what to carry.

Common item exceptions

These examples apply when the item is not protected during a dangerous death.

Item What can be lost
Looting bag The bag's contents are added to your lost items.
Rune pouch or divine rune pouch The runes inside are lost.
Toxic blowpipe It becomes uncharged, with darts and scales added to the lost items.
Bow of faerdhinen or Blade of saeldor in the Wilderness or a PvP area It becomes an enhanced crystal weapon seed, including corrupted versions.
Crystal helm, body or legs in the Wilderness or a PvP area They become 1, 3 or 2 crystal armour seeds respectively.

Untradeable does not always mean safe. Some equipment breaks, loses an upgrade or turns into components. Carrying extra supplies and loot also increases what you can lose.

After a death

  1. Check your inventory and worn gear at home.
  2. If a monster killed you in the Wilderness, your lost items can be on the ground where you died. Return with a cheap setup and collect them promptly.
  3. If a player killed you, do not expect to recover the tradeable loot awarded to them.
  4. Restock food and prayer supplies, then adjust your equipment before trying again.
