Prayer unlocks protection prayers and combat boosts. Aim for 43 Prayer early to unlock all three protection prayers, then choose later goals for your combat style. Collect bones while training Slayer or use Sarim Hub's Drops search to find a source for the bone you want.

Start training

  1. Bring unnoted bones and choose Bury to train anywhere. Demonic ashes use Scatter and give their own Prayer XP.
  2. For more XP per bone, use bones on an altar. A player-owned house chapel is a safe option; the Wilderness Chaos Altar also has a chance to preserve each bone.
  3. Use XP rates when comparing training on your difficulty. The table below shows base XP before your account's XP modifiers.

Praying at an altar restores Prayer points. Offering bones trains the skill; simply restoring points does not.

Bone Base bury XP XP with a 3.5× altar
Regular bones 4.5 15.75
Big bones 15 52.5
Baby dragon bones 30 105
Dragon or wyvern bones 72 252
Wyrm bones 50 175
Drake bones 80 280
Dagannoth bones 125 437.5
Superior dragon bones 150 525

Ashes give base XP of 5 for fiendish, 12.5 for vile, 32.5 for malicious, 42.5 for abyssal and 55 for infernal ashes. The bone altar multipliers in this guide do not apply to scattering ashes.

Player-owned house chapel

A chapel requires 45 Construction. Its altar's starting multiplier depends on the furniture: an oak altar gives 1×, rising to 2.5× for a gilded altar. A gilded altar requires 75 Construction to build.

Build incense burners in the chapel before trying to light them. A basic incense burner requires 61 Construction, 4 oak planks and 2 steel bars; ordinary chapel torches and lamps do not add this bonus. Each lit incense burner adds another 0.5×. A gilded altar with both burners lit therefore gives 3.5× bone XP. Bring a tinderbox and clean marrentill to light burners; each lighting consumes one marrentill. Re-light burners when they go out, then use unnoted bones on the altar.

You can use a friend's house if its owner is online, inside their house, out of building mode and has left the house unlocked. See Construction for buying a house and entering it.

Wilderness Chaos Altar

Choose Chaos Altar (Bones) in Sarim Hub. This destination is in level 40+ Wilderness. Carry a small, replaceable batch and read Death before taking valuable supplies.

Use unnoted bones on the altar to start offering them. It gives 3.5× base bone XP and has a 50% chance to preserve a bone after an offering. A preserved bone can be offered again. This is a chance on each offering, so the number of offerings from a trip varies.

The Elder Chaos Druid exchanges noted bones for unnoted bones for 3,000 coins per bone. Use the noted bones on him, choose an amount and leave room for the unnoted bones. Budget for the coin stack as well as the bones you risk.

Directly offering noted bones has a separate donor eligibility requirement. For the general route, use unnoted bones or the druid's exchange. The 50% preservation effect applies in the Wilderness and the supported donator-zone altar; a safe altar using the same appearance elsewhere does not automatically preserve bones.

Useful Prayer goals

Prayer Level Additional requirement
Protect from Magic 37 —
Protect from Missiles 40 —
Protect from Melee 43 —
Eagle Eye 44 —
Mystic Might 45 —
Chivalry 60 65 Defence
Piety 70 70 Defence
Rigour 74 70 Defence and learned from a dexterous prayer scroll
Augury 77 70 Defence and learned from an arcane prayer scroll

Use Read on the relevant prayer scroll and confirm learning it. The scroll is consumed when the prayer is learned; reaching the Prayer level alone does not unlock Rigour or Augury. Chambers of Xeric is a source for these scrolls.
