Maggot King is a solo boss with alternating Ranged and Magic attacks, larvae, bile and melee slams. After a kill, choose between stomach loot and an egg-only roll. The stomach can give a Crimson kisten or the elder venator fang used to make a Necklace of rupture.

Getting there

Choose Maggot King in the boss teleport menu. Cure poison or venom, heal above one hitpoint, and leave any other instance before entering. Entry is available when the Maggot King encounter is enabled for the world.

Bring food, prayer restoration, poison protection, a fire spell and a melee switch. A ranged option helps deal with airborne larvae. The encounter's attacks can kill you.

Fight

Ranged and Magic

The fight begins with Ranged attacks. Use Protect from Missiles, then switch to Protect from Magic when the attack style changes. The matching protection prayer blocks the ordinary projectile damage. Unblocked Ranged hits can poison you.

When Maggot King screeches, turn off all three protection prayers. The screech hits through an active protection prayer and deals no damage if all three are off. Watch the falling carrion during this attack, then restore the appropriate prayer for the next phase.

Move off bile and marked carrion impact tiles. Carrion splashes onto nearby tiles after its first impact. Poisonous bile can reduce your remaining poison protection and poison you; sticky bile drains a melee combat stat and delays your next attack.

Larvae

Larvae begin appearing once the boss falls to 1,250 hitpoints. They land on alternating sides of the arena and move across it. Intercept airborne larvae with a ranged attack, or kill them after landing. Avoid standing on a larva: repeated contact deals increasing damage and heals Maggot King. Larvae also eat carrion to heal the boss.

Melee slams and enrage

Melee phases unlock at 980 hitpoints. Move east or west after the boss lines up its slam. Protect from Melee reduces slam damage if you fail to move clear. Click to counterattack as the slam lands. The first melee hit of a correctly timed counterattack deals 50% more damage, rounded down; a crush counterattack also attacks a much lower defence roll.

At 299 hitpoints, Maggot King enrages. Ordinary Ranged and Magic volleys stop, leaving repeated screeches and melee phases. Keep moving for slams and switch protection prayers off for each screech.

Fire spells

Successful Fire Strike, Fire Bolt, Fire Blast, Fire Wave and Fire Surge hits add a burn stack, up to five stacks. Each stack adds one damage to the next five burn pulses. Burn pulses occur every four ticks. Active stacks also lower the boss's Magic defence bonus by 20 each. Other fire-themed attacks do not automatically count as these spells.

Claiming a kill

Wait for the corpse, then choose one option:

  • Open-stomach: one main loot roll, a separate 1/40 elite clue roll and a separate base 1/3,500 Maggot marquess roll.
  • Take-eggs: one egg-only roll. It can award nothing, and forfeits the stomach loot, clue and direct pet roll.

Leaving the instance forfeits an unclaimed corpse. Clear enough inventory space to collect the whole result. Your loot is fixed at the kill; changing equipment before claiming does not reroll it. After claiming, Maggot King returns in 15 seconds.

Stomach drops

These are base chances per stomach claim, before drop-rate bonuses. The unique gate is 43/8,840, split between kisten and fang. If it fails, one common outcome is chosen. Unique boosts therefore also change the unconditional common chances. Clue and pet rolls are separate.

Item Quantity Rarity
Crimson kisten 1 1/520
Elder venator fang 1 1/340
Stymphike tartare 2–4 1/2
Uncut ruby (noted) 6–13 1/7
Mort myre fungus (noted) 50–76 1/10
Runite ore (noted) 12–15 1/20
Gold ore (noted) 24–32 1/20
Mithril ore (noted) 36–41 1/20
Adamantite ore (noted) 30–40 1/10
Orikalkum gravel 4–5 1/25
Venator fang 112–179 1/50
Venator tooth 178–219 1/50

The tartare outcome also gives one dull ancient medal. Tartare heals 26 hitpoints inside the arena, poisons you and adds a four-tick total attack delay when eaten. It becomes rotten when taken out. Polishing a medal consumes it: inside the arena it restores Prayer in pulses and can also boost combat stats; outside, it falls apart.

Use Venator fangs or teeth on Hickton to exchange them one-for-one for dragon arrowtips or dragon dart tips respectively.

Egg rewards

See Maggot eggs for the separate egg-only table and each egg's pet chance.
