Scorch is an item perk made at Item Workbench. Its compatible equipment is listed above.

What it changes

A positive direct hit against a monster that survives can ignite a four-pulse burn. Each pulse occurs two game ticks after the previous one: 1.2 seconds between pulses and 4.8 seconds for the full burn.

To calculate each pulse, multiply the triggering hit by the level fraction, round down, divide by four and round up. Each pulse is capped at 50 damage, giving a maximum calculated total of 200 per trigger.

When it helps

Adds damage after a successful hit without delaying your next attack. Direct multi-hit attacks can start separate burns, and those burns can overlap.

Worked example

If a level-5 Scorch trigger is triggered by a 50-damage hit, half is 25; dividing by four and rounding up gives 7 damage per pulse. All four pulses calculate 28 bonus damage in total. A much larger trigger cannot exceed four calculated 50-damage pulses. Later encounter reductions can still alter damage dealt.

Limits and interactions

Only positive, non-healing hits with an attack style against living monsters qualify. The primary hit must leave the monster alive. Player attacks, typeless damage and secondary perk hits do not trigger Scorch.

There is no cooldown or one-burn-per-target restriction. Each eligible component hit of a direct multi-hit attack or special can roll separately; existing burns can stack.

The burn ends early if you or the monster dies. The generated burn pulses do not roll accuracy and cannot trigger another Scorch, Twin Cast or Soul Rend through these attachments.

Works against qualifying Wilderness monsters and on ordinary Gridmaster attacks. Gridmaster Echo and Guardian hits are excluded. The weapon must be equipped when the triggering hit lands; an already-started burn captures its damage and weapon.

Attach and upgrade

At home, open Item Workbench and choose Perks Mode. Select the equipment from your inventory, then choose Scorch. The first application rolls a level from 1 to 5. Applying it again can raise its level; an equal or lower roll keeps the current level and does not refund materials used. Each attempt normally spends the recipe again; eligible donation ranks can preserve individual recipe entries. This does not change the level-roll chances. Level 5 cannot be upgraded further.

Material Full recipe Remove Perk return
Fractured Essence 100 70
Refined Essence 60 42
Resonant Catalyst 5 3

Stored and carried materials combine; storage is used first. The return column is for Remove Perk in Perks Mode. It refunds part of one base recipe to Workbench Storage, even after several upgrades. Disintegration destroys the equipment and its attachments.

Level roll chances

Rolled level Chance per attempt
1 40%
2 24%
3 18%
4 10%
5 8%

These are the chances of each exact rolled level. Selecting a level preview does not choose the result. Repeated attempts do not guarantee level 5.
